Palaeontology Sculpture: Jurassic Herbivore – Barry Davies RCA

135 million year old fossil of an as yet unidentified herbivore from the Jurassic period.

The nature of my project here is to replicate the fossil from rock to bronze.

However as a sculptor my artistic input is firstly to identify the one fossil amongst a plethora of others that is intrinsically beautiful in its appearance, stance (layout) and general appeal. The fossil below is indicative of this. The first image is of the actual fossil showing the excavated rock that has carefully exposed the fossilised bones. You will see in the second image it has been replicated into bronze and how I have applied some well considered artistic license by slightly altering the angle of the right foreleg back to a more attractive position.

My aim here is to tap into a largely undiscovered sculptural beauty inherent in the science of Palaeontology and Anthropology and encapsulating this natural beauty in bronze.
